Why should you read Homunculus?

If you think that mangas=shit, maybe this one can change your mind. Homunculus was created by Hideo Yamamoto and  it's about a homeless man called Susumu Nakoshi, who lives in a car. He agrees to do, for cach, a surgical intervention called 'trepanning", in which a hole of 3mm is drilled in the skull to relieve pressure and increase the flow of the blood to the brain. This process, in theory, should elevate brain's activity to a higher level, "develop the sixth sense".

After surgery, Nakoshi starts to have hallucinations when closing his right eye. He sees people around him as deformed monsters, which are later described as disorders of the mind of these people. Mostly, childhood traumas. There're many references to Freud and Jung's psychoanalysis, making the plot more real and interesting without hampering the understanding.

This plot serves as a background for the true nature of Homunculus. This is not a manga about having super powers, deal with them (Peter Parker, I'm looking at you) and fight some bad guys who says "this cannot be happening, I am invincible ". While getting involved with others' problems, Nakoshi will inevitably have to confront his own traumas.

  3. this concept of making a hole in a scull to improve brain power is really old.. there are holes found in 3000 year old egyptian and summerian sculls and there are proofs that people lived with those holes.. so it might be true actually for that small hole to make you smarter or it unlocks 6th sense

  4. the deceptive nature of the stigma attached to manga is a shame. manga is a great form of media and should deserve more credit than that
